A public policy organization has issued an urgent alert stating affirmative votes are needed from only two more states before a Constitutional Convention could be assembled in which "today's corrupt politicians and judges" could formally change the U.S. Constitution's "'problematic' provisions to reflect the philosophical and social mores of our contemporary society."
"Don't for one second doubt that delegates to a Con Con wouldn't revise the First Amendment into a government-controlled privilege, replace the 2nd Amendment with a 'collective' right to self-defense, and abolish the 4th, 5th, and 10th Amendments, and the rest of the Bill of Rights," said the warning from
the American Policy Institute.
"Additions could include the non-existent separation of church and state, the 'right' to abortion and euthanasia, and much, much more," the group said.
The warning comes at a time when Barack Obama, who is to be voted the next president by the Electoral College Monday, has expressed his belief the U.S. Constitution needs to be interpreted through the lens of current events.
Tom DeWeese, who runs the center and its education and grassroots work, told WND the possibilities stunned him when he discovered
lawmakers in Ohio are considering a call for a Constitutional Convention. He explained that 32 other states already have taken that vote, and only one more would be needed to require Congress to name convention delegates who then would have more power than Congress itself.
"The U.S. Constitution places no restriction on the purposes for which the states can call for a convention," the alert said. "If Ohio votes to call a Con Con, for whatever purpose, the United States will be only one state away from total destruction. And it's a safe bet that those who hate this nation, and all She stands for, are waiting to pounce upon this opportunity to re-write our Constitution."
DeWeese told WND that a handful of quickly responding citizens appeared at the Ohio Legislature yesterday for the meeting at which the convention resolution was supposed to be handled.
State officials suddenly decided to delay action, he said, giving those concerned by the possibilities of such a convention a little time to breathe.
According to a Fox News report, Obama has stated repeatedly his desire for empathetic judges who "understand" the plight of minorities.
The final vote from the 1787 Constitutional Convention
In a 2007 speech to Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest abortion provider, he said, "We need somebody who's got the heart, the empathy, to recognize what it's like to be a young teenage mom. The empathy to understand what it's like to be poor, or African-American, or gay, or disabled, or old. And that's the criteria by which I'm going to be selecting my judges."
Obama also committed himself to respecting the Constitution but said the founding document must be interpreted in the context of current affairs and events.
Read how today's America already has rejected the Constitution, and what you can do about it.
Melody Barnes, a senior domestic policy adviser to the Obama campaign, said in the Fox News report, "His view is that our society isn't static and the law isn't static as well. That the Constitution is a living and breathing document and that the law and the justices who interpret it have to understand that."
Obama has criticized Justice Clarence Thomas, regarded as a conservative member of the court, as not a strong jurist or legal thinker. And Obama voted against both Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, two appointees of President Bush who vote with Thomas on many issues.
Further,
WND also reported Obama believes the Constitution is flawed, because it fails to address wealth redistribution, and he says the Supreme Court should have intervened years ago to accomplish that.
Obama said in a 2001 radio interview the Constitution is flawed in that it does not mandate or allow for redistribution of wealth.
Obama told
Chicago's public station WBEZ-FM that "redistributive change" is needed, pointing to what he regarded as a failure of the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren in its rulings on civil rights issues in the 1960s.
The Warren court, he said, failed to "break free from the essential constraints" in the U.S. Constitution and launch a major redistribution of wealth. But Obama, then an Illinois state lawmaker, said the legislative branch of government, rather than the courts, probably was the ideal avenue for accomplishing that goal.
In the 2001 interview, Obama said:
If you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movement and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to invest formal rights in previously dispossessed people, so that now I would have the right to vote. I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it I’d be OK
But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. To that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren Court, it wasn't that radical. It didn't break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the Founding Fathers in the Constitution, at least as it's been interpreted, and the Warren Court interpreted in the same way, that generally the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties. Says what the states can't do to you. Says what the federal government can't do to you, but doesn't say what the federal government or
state government must do on your behalf.
And that hasn't shifted and one of the, I think, tragedies of the civil rights movement was because the civil rights movement became so court-focused I think there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that.
The video is available here:
DeWeese said the Constitutional Convention effort was begun in the 1980s by those who wanted to rein in government with an amendment requiring a balanced budget for the
federal agencies.
"Certainly all loyal Americans want government constrained by a balanced budget," the alert said. "But calling a Con Con risks a revolutionary change in our form of government. The ultimate outcome will likely be a new constitution, one that would possibly eliminate the Article 1 restriction to the coinage of real money or even eliminate gun or property rights."
He noted that when the last Constitutional Convention met in 1787, the original goal was to amend the Articles of Confederation. Instead, delegates simply threw them out and wrote a new Constitution.
"We were blessed in 1787; the Con Con delegates were the leaders of a freedom movement that had just cleansed this land of tyranny," the warning said. "Today's corrupt politicians and judges would like nothing better than the ability to legally ignore the Constitution - to modify its "problematic" provisions to reflect the philosophical and socials mores of our contemporary society."
DeWeese then listed some of the states whose legislatures already have issued a call: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Colorado,
Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
"You may have heard that some of those 32 states have voted to rescind their calls. This is true," the warning continued. "However, under Article V of the Constitution, Congress must call a Constitutional Convention whenever two-thirds (or 34) of the states apply. The Constitution makes no provision for rescission."
The warning also suggested that the belief that a Constitution Convention could be directed in its purpose is misplaced.
"In truth no restrictive language from any state can legally limit the scope or outcome of a Convention! Once a Convention is called, Congress determines how the delegates to the Convention are chosen. Once chosen, those Convention delegates possess more power than the U.S. Congress itself," the warning said.
"We have not had a Constitutional Convention since 1787. That Convention was called to make small changes in the Articles of Confederation. As a point of fact, several states first passed resolutions requiring their delegates discuss amendments to the Articles ONLY, forbidding even discussion of foundational changes. However, following the delegates' first agreement that their meetings be in secret, their second act was to agree to debate those state restrictions and to declare the Articles of Confederation NULL AND VOID! They also changed the ratification process, reducing the required states' approval from 100 percent to 75 percent. There is no reason to believe a contemporary Con Con wouldn't further 'modify' Article V restrictions to suit its purpose," the center warning said.
The website Principled Policy opined it is true that any new document would have to be submitted to a ratification process.
"However fighting a new Constitution would be a long, hard, ugly and expensive battle which is guaranteed to leave the nation split along ideological lines. It is not difficult to envision civil unrest, riots or even civil war as a result of any re-writing of the current Constitution," the site said.
American Policy cited a statement from former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger that said, "There is no effective way to limit or muzzle the actions of a Constitutional Convention. The convention could make its own rules and set its own agenda."
"This is a horrible time to try such a crazy scheme," the policy center said. "The majority of U.S. voters just elected a dedicated leftist as president. … Our uniquely and purely American concept of individual rights, endowed by our Creator, would be quickly set aside as an anachronistic relic of a bygone era; replaced by new 'collective' rights, awarded and enforced by government for the 'common good.'
"And state No. 34 is likely sitting silently in the wings, ready to act with lightning speed, sealing the fate of our once great nation before we can prevent it," the center said.
A Constitutional Convention would be, DeWeese told WND, "our worst nightmare in an age when you've got people who believe the Constitution is an antiquated document, we need to have everything from controls on guns … all of these U.N. treaties … and controls on how we raise our children."
"When you take the document that is in their way, put it on the table and say how would you like to change it," he said.
American Policy Center suggested several courses of action for people who are concerned, including the suggestion that Ohio lawmakers be contacted.
WND also has reported an associate at a Chicago law firm whose partner served on a finance committee for Obama has advocated simply abandoning the U.S. Constitution's requirement that a president be a "natural-born" citizen.
The paper was written in 2006 by Sarah Herlihy, just two years after Obama had won a landslide election in Illinois to the U.S. Senate. Herlihy is listed as an associate at the Chicago firm of
Kirkland & Ellis. A partner in the same firm, Bruce I. Ettelson, cites his membership on the finance committees for both Obama and Sen. Richard Durbin on the corporate website.
The
article by Herlihy is available online under law review articles from Kent University.
The issue of Obama's own eligibility is the subject of nearly two dozen court cases in recent weeks, including at least two that have gone to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Herlihy's published paper reveals that the requirement likely was considered in a negative light by organizations linked to Obama in the months before he announced in 2007 his candidacy for the presidency.
"The natural born citizen requirement in Article II of the United States Constitution has been called the 'stupidest provision' in the Constitution, 'undecidedly un-American,' 'blatantly discriminatory,' and the 'Constitution's worst provision,'" Herlihy begins in her introduction to the paper titled, "Amending the Natural Born Citizen Requirement: Globalization as the Impetus and the Obstacle."

Las Vegas Churches Accept Gambling Chips!!!
This may come as a surprise to those of you not living in Las Vegas, but there are more Catholic Churches than Casinos. Not surprisingly, some worshipers at Sunday Services will give casino chips rather than cash when the basket is passed. Since they get chips from many different casinos, the churches have devised a method to coleect the offerings. The churches send all their collected chips to a nearby Franciscan Monastery for sorting and then the chips are taken to the casinos of origin and cashed in. This is done by the Chip Monks!

Bowl Game Hopes
No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 2 Florida: Do I root for the team that t.u. beat so they can say they should be the national championship or do I root for the Florida team that I don't like either?
No. 5 USC vs. No. 8 Penn State: Go Penn State!
No. 12 Cincinnati vs. No. 19 Virginia Tech: Ummm...don't know if I really care.
No. 4 Alabama vs. No. 6 Utah: Roll Tide Roll!!!
No. 3 t.u. (texas university) vs. No. 10 Ohio State: Go Buckeyes!
One thing though, where's Texas Tech? They're ranked seventh and not in a "big" bowl game. Now that's sad.

Just For Fun...
A restaurant owner in Rutino, Italy (near Salerno), told police in November that as he was negotiating over the building's lease with his landlords, one hit him in the head with a chair and two others kicked him repeatedly in the stomach. The landlords were not from La Cosa Nostra but were a priest and two nuns from the local Catholic order that owns the building. [Daily Telegraph (London), 11-3-08]
Facing a state budget crisis in July, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger fired about 10,000 temporary and part-time workers and ordered the 200,000 permanent employees to be paid only the minimum wage of $6.55 an hour until the legislature passed a crisis-solving budget. However, a week later the State Controller John Chiang pointed out that state payroll records could not be changed to accommodate the cut because they were written in the antiquated COBOL computer language, and virtually the only state employees who knew the code were some of the part-timers Schwarzenegger had just fired. Black Friday
Yes, I did attend the early morning sale at Wal-Mart this past Friday. It was interesting to watch everyone go crazy over "stuff." Basically, it was a mad rush of people so enamoured with items that were on sale that they would do anything to get that item including the following:
(From Daily News Wire Services)
Wal-Mart Shoppers Trample NY Worker - A man was trampled to death as people burst through the doors at a suburban store and knocked him down.
(From Daily News Wire Services)
Fatal Shooting Follows Brawl At Toy Store - The shooting occurred in a crowded toy store, but the authorities say it wasn't related to the bargain hunting frenzy. Instead, the two men pulled guns and killed each other after the women with them erupted into a bloody brawl.
(From ABC News at 11:00 am on Monday, December 1)
Shots have been fired at a mall in the North. Information is not clear why, but it was enough of a story to make the news.
Well, I guess we can see how people are celebrating Christmas this year. I sure hope we are different. I hope we "save" money by shopping the sales, but more than that, I hope we remember why we celebrate Christmas. May Christ be honored in our Christmas this year! After all, He is the reason for the season!

A Conundrum Of Perplexing Possibilities
Well, now that Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma, you have Tech, OU, and t.u. with one loss each sitting atop the Big 12 South. The problem is accentuated by the lack of playoffs, etc. because only one of those three teams can represent the Big 12 South in the Big 12 Championship game. Now that wouldn't be so bad if the BCS did not exist. However, who should go? Should Tech go even though they were embarrassed by OU? Yet, they did beat t.u. Should OU go to the Big 12 Championship game even though Texas beat them? They did embarrass Tech. Should Texas go to the big game even though Tech, which was embarrassed by OU which was beaten by t.u., beat t.u.? Frustrating isn't it? That is why I say we develop a playoff system in conjunction with the bowl games. You select 32 teams (1/4 of the NCAA football teams) to enter into the playoff system (you would operate the selection process just like the basketball system). You could use the small bowl games for the first games and work up the ladder and have the big bowl games for the final playoff games. You still have all the money and bowl games everyone worries about, yet still have a playoff system. Furthermore, all three of the Big 12 South teams would have the opportunity to reach the big, BIG game against maybe a Florida, Alabama, etc.
Well, who do you think should go to the Big 12 South Championship game as it stands now. (Of course, after t.u. loses to A&M, it will be a much easier choice!!!) Whoop!

Who's Proud Tonight?

I guess Michelle Obama is finally proud of her nation. Sad to say...I'm not.
A 44th President

Unfortunately, Barack Hussein Obama has been naively elected president of the United States. Now, I guess I can look forward to him sharing the money. Oh wait, if that was true, then he wouldn't be worried about spending millions upon millions of dollars for his coronation...er, acceptance speech and party. He could instead help families like mine who often struggle by spreading some of that money our way. I mean, let's at least be consistent.

Finally, here is the main reason for the election of Barack Hussein Obama:

- The ignorance of the masses.

Now, having ranted and raved (I guess you could say that this is my "rioting" online), we are instructed to pray for the powers that be. So let's pray and pray hard!
America's Just Reward

I'm afraid that America will be like Israel when it wanted Saul as its King. We may get what we now have asked for.
It's Iowa's Fault

Iowa is given credit for starting Barack Hussein Obama's presidential campaign. So, the question is, do we disown them now or later?
Here, Here!!!

As I've said before, the secession of Texas would probably be a good thing. Besides, we already have Schlitterbahn and Six Flags, so we're set!
Food For Thought
The highest glory of the American Revolution was this - that it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.

V-Day

And no, I don't necessarily mean "Victory Day." I'm referring to tomorrow being the last day to vote. I hope all of you vote and that you vote according to Biblical standards. Don't worry...I won't tell you who to vote for, but I sure will tell you what issues to vote against!

Should've Known

VIENNA, Austria – OPEC said at an emergency meeting Friday that it will slash oil production by 1.5 million barrels to stem the "dramatic collapse" of oil prices, but crude prices plunged 7 percent anyway as financial markets spiraled downward across the globe.
Demand for crude has evaporated and the supply levers held by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries appear to have little influence in the current economic climate.
Iran and Venezuela pushed for a cut of 2 million barrels a day, but there were concerns among other OPEC members that a more severe production cut would exacerbate a deteriorating economic crisis and further destroy demand.
OPEC officials, however, signaled they were prepared to slice deeper quickly if crude continues its freefall.
OPEC is already producing 300,000 barrels a day above its own quota of about 29 million barrels.
If that overproduction is stopped, and all members comply with the 1.5-million cut, OPEC would produce about 1.8 million fewer barrels of oil a day.
OPEC officials, however, left no doubt that they were ready to slice production again quickly if Friday's decision does not end the price freefall.
The emergency meeting was initially scheduled for Nov. 18, but that was abruptly rescheduled for Friday in response to prices that have entered a tailspin since their historic high of nearly $150 in July.
OPEC President Chakib Khelil said OPEC was ready to convene another emergency session before its next planned gathering in December in Algeria "if there are further decisions that have to be made.
Analyst John Hall of London-based John Hall Associates said the OPEC decision will not have a dramatic effect, adding he assumed any upward trend would stop at between $80 and $90.
But there was no such trend Friday as markets plunged global and fear of an extended recession spread.
Wall Street joined world stock markets in a precipitous plunge, with the Dow Jones industrials dropping more than 400 points in the opening minutes of trading.
Oil futures slid $4.46 to $63.38 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"It's clear that the ministers are attempting to underpin at $60 a barrel," said James R. Crawford an analyst with Inter Emirates. "But where the market will settle remains open."
OPEC statement Friday reflected alarm over the erosion of revenues for oil producing nations, as did the unusually short deliberations leading to its decision.
"Oil prices have witnessed a dramatic collapse — unprecedented in speed and magnitude," said the 13-nation organization. "This slowdown in demand is serving to exacerbate the situation in a market which has been oversupplied with crude for some time.
It also warned of hard times ahead for suppliers, saying "the fall in demand will deepen" in the coming months.
OPEC indirectly asked Russia and other major oil exporters outside the organization not to undercut efforts to prop up prices.
"OPEC cannot be expected to bear alone the burden of restoring equilibrium," said the statement.
OPEC Secretary-General Abdullah El-Badri said before a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Wednesday that he would not ask Russia for oil production cuts as global prices fall. Some analysts have said Russia was unlikely to agree to production cuts, given that it already is battling with falling output as West Siberian oil fields mature.
But others spoke of behind the scenes negotiations between Moscow and OPEC on the issue.
The fall in crude prices despite OPEC's move suggested the organization's power to raise prices by cutting supply may be fading amid a global economic crisis that has crimped demand for oil. In the past, sizable cuts in OPEC production have led to significant jumps in prices.
The latest weekly report from the U.S. Department of Energy shows that demand has fallen in 38 of the past 42 weeks. U.S. demand is down nearly 10 percent during the past four weeks year on year. The U.S. still consumes one out of every four barrels of oil produced.
El-Badri on Friday took pains to emphasize that OPEC's move was predicated by a need not to raise prices but to put a floor underneath them. Iran, Venezuela and other OPEC members have suggested that for them, selling oil under $80 was a loss-maker, and Iraq on Thursday said it would have to rethink next year's national budget if prices remain under that level.
El-Badri said OPEC could not be expected to solve the world's financial crisis — something the organization did not cause and could not cure.
"OPEC cannot bail out the problems of others," he said.

Consistency Is The Name Of The Game
If Barack Hussein Obama is all about redistributing the wealth, then why doesn't he take some of his $150,000,000 contributed to his campaign and give it to McCain who settled for the federal money totalling $86,000,000. If Obama is so much about change, then why is he accepting money from political groups when he originally said he would not. Furthermore, if he is so "concerned" about others, then why does he not give some of his $150 million to fellow Democrats as Harry Reid has asked him to do. It seems that what is good for us (a redistribution of the wealth, a.k.a. socialism) is not good for Obama. Maybe he's not so different from all those other politicians. Well, so much for change...

Way To Go...

Thanks to the "High Court" of Connecticut, there are now three states that have legalized gay "marriage." (If you can't hear the sarcasm in my voice, believe me...it is there.) Thanks to judges believing they are above the people, Constitution, and God, we have a country that is being run into the ground. (Oh I know - they are not the only reason, but they are at least a big one.)

We wonder why our nation is going down the drains, and then events like this happen. How in the world can anyone even argue for a gay "marriage"? That does not even fit the definition of marriage (marry = to join as husband and wife; [thanks Webster!]).

Well, while this happens, the Italian Prime Minister is now saying that the world financial markets need to close while the leaders of the world meet this weekend to form a new global financial system. Hmmm...

Well, at least Glenn Beck spoke passionately about the return of Christ on his nationally syndicated television show. Go Glenn!!!

In case you can't tell, I'm more than frustrated with our nation. I love it, but I'm FRUSTRATED and ANGRY at how our nation has been stolen from us by the socialists and de facto communists! Maybe it's time for a new revolution of the people. After all, isn't this nation based on "We the people..."?!?

More Economic Woes?
Well, don't call me an alarmist, but I've have been closely following the economic struggles of the world. Nation after nation is having to borrow money from other nations to prop up its economy and government. (Read about Iceland and how it could not even receive a loan for 4.5 billion dollars from the U.S., European Union, or the Internation Monetary Fund - all of which should be able to donate that in the blink of an eye...technically.) Now, what happens when those nations who loaned the money need it? Such practices between nations (at least at this time...) is just delaying a true crash. Furthermore, (and this is the important part), several "Central" banks have dropped their interest rates. In other words, several national banks worked in a cooperative effort to help head off a worldwide depression. Consequently, the United Nations, along with many, many, MANY, nations around the world have stepped forward calling for a global monetary policy, fund, and program. In essence, this is the first step toward a true global, one world, monetary system. Now, I know many of you are laughing at this point, but when you are reading the economic news and listening to the political/business leaders of the nations calling for such a thing, it does make you sit up and take notice. Besides, why couldn't this happen? Congress has already spent over $1,000,000,000,000.00 to help "aid" our economy (hello Socialism!!!). At this point, Congress is telling everyone that major changes are needed (including in the functioning of our government, etc.). You see, there are things happening that many people do not know about unless you are a news junkie (okay, I admit I watch too much news...).
I believe if this crisis continues much longer, there will be major changes that will propel us at the speed of light towards the return of Christ. Not that this should surprise us, but are we watching and really waiting for the return of Christ? I do not know.

Common Sense Plan by Dave Ramsey
(The following is Step 2 of Dave Ramsey's "3 Steps To Change The Nation Future". Step 1 is prayer for our leaders. Step 2 includes sending this plan to Congress. Step 3 is to send this plan to others.)
Years of bad decisions and stupid mistakes have created an economic nightmare in this country, but $700 billion in new debt is not the answer. As a tax-paying American citizen, I will not support any congressperson who votes to implement such a policy. Instead, I submit the following three steps:

I. INSURANCE
A. Insure the subprime bonds/mortgages with an underlying FHA-type insurance. Government-insured and backed loans would have an instant market all over the world, creating immediate and needed liquidity.
B. In order for a company to accept the government-backed insurance, they must do two things:
1. Rewrite any mortgage that is more than three months delinquent to a 6% fixed-rate mortgage.
a. Roll all back payments with no late fees or legal costs into the balance. This brings homeowners current and allows them a chance to keep their homes.
b. Cancel all prepayment penalties to encourage refinancing or the sale of the property to pay off the bad loan. In the event of foreclosure or short sale, the borrower will not be held liable for any deficit balance. FHA does this now, and that encourages mortgage companies to go the extra mile while
working with the borrower—again limiting foreclosures and ruined lives.
2. Cancel ALL golden parachutes of EXISTING and FUTURE CEOs and executive team members as long as the company holds these government-insured bonds/mortgages. This keeps underperforming executives from being paid when they don’t do their jobs.
C. This backstop will cost less than $50 billion—a small fraction of the current proposal.

II. MARK TO MARKET
A. Remove mark to market accounting rules for two years on only subprime Tier III bonds/mortgages. This keeps companies from being forced to artificially mark down bonds/mortgages below the value of the underlying mortgages and real estate.
B. This move creates patience in the market and has an immediate stabilizing effect on failing and ailing banks—and it costs the taxpayer nothing.

III. CAPITAL GAINS TAX
A. Remove the capital gains tax completely. Investors will flood the real estate and stock market in search of tax-free profits, creating tremendous—and immediate—liquidity in the markets. Again, this costs the taxpayer nothing.
B. This move will be seen as a lightning rod politically because many will say it is helping the rich. The truth is the rich will benefit, but it will be their money that stimulates the economy. This will enable all Americans to have more stable jobs and retirement investments that go up instead of down.
This is not a time for envy, and it’s not a time for politics. It’s time for all of us, as Americans, to
stand up, speak out, and fix this mess.
(Further explanation and usage of the above plan can be found at Dave Ramsey's website.)

A Simple Financial Solution

Everyone seems to be talking about the economy now. Even people that normally "dislike" Economics, etc. seem to be interested in the trend of the Dow Jones, etc. Furthermore, with Congress screaming "Armageddon!", it seems as if the world is about to end. But is it really? Such corrections in the market have occurred before (Dot Com bubble burst, Black Thursday, etc.) and the U.S. and the economy survived. Even the Great Depression was not the end (though through the U.S. government it was prolonged). Now understand, I am not happy about what is happening, but much of it is contrived. Much of the problem has come about from greed and improper government interference. In fact, many of the people who caused the problem are the SAME ones trying to "fix" the problem. Now that's scary! Unless, of course, you enjoy living in the United Socialist America.

What can be done to fix the situation? Well, actually there are several solutions. One of the easier and actually "common sensical" solutions would be to remove the Mark-to-Market accounting (a.k.a., Fair Value accounting) requirement and allow the companies to actually free up capital thus improving the liquidity status. Here are some definitions of the Mark-to-Market accounting process:

1. The act of recording the price or value of a security, portfolio or account to reflect its current market value rather than its book value. This is done most often in futures accounts to make sure that margin requirements are being met. If the current market value causes the margin account to fall below its required level, the trader will be faced with a margin call. (WSJ)
2. In terms of mutual funds, a MTM is when the net asset value (NAV) of the fund is valued upon the most current market values. Mutual Funds are marked to market on a daily basis at the market close so that investors have an idea of the fund's NAV. (WSJ)

Furthermore, such accounting methods have consistently led to fraud in the financial arena. (Like we need more of that!)

Where's The Energizer Bunny?

Yes, we are still without power. Fortunately, a generator has been donated, and we were able to save our food in the freezer. They told us the power would be "back on" by Wednesday night or Thursday morning. I hope it's before then, but if not, well, I guess we'll wait.
Hope all of you are fine.

Constitutional Questions

(The following is from the Alliance Defense Fund website. The white papers are also available for download.)

Pulpit Freedom
You may be aware of a special project we’re undertaking here at the Alliance Defense Fund, culminating in an event on Sunday, September 28 called Pulpit Freedom Sunday. We are excited about this opportunity that will, God-willing, give us the opportunity to restore now missing aspects of the First Amendment to our nation’s spiritual leaders. It’s no surprise that not everyone agrees and we have recently come under attack. Many Americans’ attitudes and actions toward slavery, child labor, civil rights, and even the American Revolution itself started in the pews of our nation’s churches. As pastors preached and taught Biblical principles related to those issues and evaluated the politicians who promoted or decried them, their parishioners could decide their own stance in light of Scripture. Starting in 1954, that most basic right was ripped away from our pulpits. The U.S. Congress amended IRS Code 501(c)3 without debate or analysis to restrict the speech of non-profit tax exempt entities, including churches. So, for the last 54 years, out of fear of losing their tax-exempt status, our nation’s pastors and priests have largely remained silent. Rather than risk confrontation, pastors have often self-censored their speech, ignoring blatant immorality in government and too often pronouncing their aversion from speaking about public policy. Those pastors who have longed to be relevant to society, to preach the Gospel in a way that has meaning in modern America, have studiously ignored much that has gone on in every tumultuous election season lest they drew wrath from the IRS.On Pulpit Freedom Sunday, pastors from 20 states will reclaim their constitutional right. From the pulpit, they will advise their congregation what scripture says about today’s issues apply those issues to the candidates standing for election just like their forefathers did for 150 years. This week, the Washington Post reported opposition to Pulpit Freedom Sunday spearheaded by Americans United for Separation of Church and State. You can read that article by clicking here. (You can read a response to that article from ADF Attorney Erik Stanley by clicking here.) Those who oppose us publicly demand “separation of church and state” when it suits their agenda. They claim to defend “free speech,” when, actually, they want the government to monitor, censor, and control what happens in our churches and punish those whose speech violates their dark vision for America’s future. At ADF, we do not welcome attacks but understand they will come as we humbly seek to do God’s will to defend these pastors who love God and want to serve Him. We expect complaints will be made to the IRS. We will pray and stand firm. We will represent these pastors should they come under fire and we will fight this battle all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, if necessary. It is just that important. As theologian Dr. John Frame notes, initiatives of this type are part and parcel of our constitutional legal system:
“In some systems of law, including the United States, the only way to establish the unconstitutionality of a law is by means of a test case. Someone must break that law, undergo trial, and then use as a defense that the law is unconstitutional. Such test-case lawbreaking is not a violation of the overall system of law… but rather attempts to purify the system by eliminating inappropriate legislation.”We will fight this battle because it is the right thing to do. Our pastors and priests should be able to use their knowledge of Scripture to advise us in all areas of life, even in politics. By God’s grace, we will win this battle, but we cannot do it alone. We need your prayers, your support and the Lord’s blessing and protection. John 15:5.

Funny Illustration
An elderly man was desperately ill. Knowing the time for his departure was near, he called for his closest friends to come see him one last time. Attending him were his doctor, his pastor and his business manager. The old man said, “I know you can’t take it with you, but who knows for sure? What if the experts are mistaken? I want to account for all possibilities. So I’m giving you each an envelope containing $100,000. When I die, I want you each to slip the envelope in my jacket pocket at the funeral service. Then, if I do need money in the life to come, I’ll be ready. And I’m giving the envelopes to you because you are my most trusted friends.” Shortly thereafter, the man did die. Each of his three friends was seen slipping something into the deceased’s coat pocket as he walked up to the casket to pay his final respects. Following the service, while these friends were visiting with each other, the doctor, with a sheepish look on his face, said, “Guys, I have a confession to make. You know with the cost of medicine today, I don’t make that much money. The hospital is desperate for funds. We can’t even replace the CAT scan machine that’s broken down. So, I took $20,000 for the new CAT scan and put the rest in the coffin.” The minister cleared his throat and looked down at his shoes. He said, “I, too, have a confession to make. As you know, our church is seriously overburdened by the needs of the homeless. I couldn’t just see burying that money. So, in hopes of helping the homeless, I took $50,000 out of the envelope and put the rest in his pocket.” Looking sternly at the doctor and the minister, the businessman exclaimed, “I can’t believe what I’m hearing. I am astonished and deeply disappointed that you would treat a solemn trust so casually. He was our friend. I want you to know that I placed in his casket my personal check for the full $100,000.”

Just Pathetic...

The Arkansas State/Texas A&M game has to be one of the most horrible games we've played in a LONG time. How in the world do you lose to Arkansas State?!? That is just ridiculous. We have talent that should make any team jealous, yet we play like we have never seen a football. Coach Sherman had better right the ship quick (and yes, I am more than willing to give someone time to get his program going...but come on, tonight was pathetic!!!) or the powerful alum will be headhunting.

Hell-fire And Brimstone

The following excerpts were taken from a commentary by Dan Kimball in the Winter 2008 issue of Leadership:

The subject of hell and judgment is all over the New Testament. Still, we don't hear much about hell today, at least not from the church. We tend to cover other subjects repeatedly, but ignore one that Jesus talks about all the time. There are some exceptions, but the preachers yelling "turn or burn" on street corners are rare.
We cannot approach the subject of hell merely as a doctrine and ignore the human impact. Teaching on hell is not for the sake of knowing Christian trivia or to satisfy theological curiosity. If we believe in hell, and if we believe people created in God's image will either experience eternity in communion with him or apart from him, then we should be communicating the gospel, both the good news and the bad news.
Of course, this calls for balance. Christians have often been guilty of making hell the primary motivation for salvation. I believe this is an alteration of the holistic gospel found in 1 Corinthians 15. But if we completely ignore the reality of hell and judgment, we are forced to make one of Jesus' frequent teachings little more than an obscure metaphor.
As Charles Spurgeon said, "If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. If they will perish, let them perish with our arms around their knees. Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for."

Christian Fraternity Will Proceed at U. of Florida

The Christian men’s fraternity Beta Upsilon Chi received an injunction in the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday that will allow it to proceed as an active “on-campus” organization the University of Florida.
According to a release on Christian News Wire, representatives from
Beta Upsilon Chi sued the university on grounds of religious discrimination after they learned they could not be an active organization on campus this year. The group exists on 20 other campuses throughout the United States, many of which are public institution like the University of Florida. The university wanted to shut down the group because being a Christian is required for membership into the organization. Florida officials say that stipulation violates the university’s own nondiscrimination policy.
“In this decision, the Court has reiterated the importance of ensuring faith-based organizations are treated fairly and equitably in the public square,” said Brett Williams, board member of Beta Upsilon Chi. “This ruling is encouraging to the young men of Beta Upsilon Chi at the University of Florida, but more importantly it makes a strong national statement that the rights of religious freedom and free association must be respected by universities.”
The case has not reached a final resolution, and as arguments continue, Beta Upsilon Chi continues to assert that the Constitution gives them the right to form a religious group and the university’s policy cannot infringe upon that.

2008 Southern Baptist Convention Compensation Study

The 2008 Compensation Study was a joint project of state Baptist conventions, GuideStone Financial Resources, and LifeWay Christian Resources. Compensation and congregational data was collected anonymously from ministers and office/custodial personnel of Southern Baptist churches and church-type missions. Reports are based on compensation for nearly 13,000 respondents from all 50 states. While this data is made available with respect for the autonomy of each local church, the information can help a church be objective in considering appropriate staff compensation. Use menu options (left) to view reports based on data from all states or for a selected state convention(s). All amounts are annual amounts based on 2008 compensation. Cost of living adjustments should be made when using the data in subsequent years. A key feature of this study is the CUSTOMIZED REPORT. It provides reports for only those churches of similar attendance, membership and budget to your own. CAUTION: Some position categories (Senior Pastor: Interim, Senior Pastor: Part-Time, and Ministerial Staff: Interim) contain a relatively small number of respondents. It would be best to include all of these respondents in reports.

Environmental Stewardship In The Judeo-Christian Tradition

I am currently studying the above titled book (which I received free in the mail) from the Action Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan. While I have not finished it, there are some good thoughts in this book. In fact, let me quote part of the introduction as it is given on the back cover.

"A fair and honest debate about religious responses to environmental issues should always distinguish theological principles from prudential judgments. The Cornwall Declaration and the accompanying essays in this volume were written to do just that. They were not written to provide theological rationale for current environmentalist fashion. Rather, they seek to articulate the broad Judeo-Christian theological principles concerning the environment, and to distinguish those principles from contrary ideas popular in the environmental movement." (Jay W. Richards)

Part 4 of the book really piqued my interest. It is entitled "A Biblical Perspective On Environmental Stewardship" and contains a section (Section IV) entitled "Some Human And Environmental Concerns For Present And Future". Within this section such issues as population growth, global warming, and species extinction are discussed. Section V, "Environmental Market Virtues," also promises to be a good read.

Besides this book, there seems to be a large undercurrent within the Judeo-Christian world to become "green." Sometimes we use the terminology of "eco-friendly" or "eco-conscious" but it basically has the same purpose. What is the general concensus on such a move? Is it warranted? Or should it be avoided at all cost? Is there some middle ground, and if there is, how do we reach it?

Church Branding

This is one of the hot topics of today. To get a greater feeling for this issue, read the following post. (Click here for original blog post.)

Branding: A blog by Dennis Richards (on Church Solutions)
10/11/2007

As I write this, I’m getting ready to ask the staff of Bent Tree, “What is branding, anyway?” My guess is that most of the responses will be standard: logo design, naming, colors, the look of the Web site or bulletin, etc. These are all valid responses, and all are elements of what makes up a brand. Dictionary.com describes “brand” as a trademark or distinctive name identifying a product or a manufacturer.
I think branding for ministries is much like contemporary worship used to be 10 or 15 years ago. People are realizing that there is something different happening, and this thing called branding is not going away. People are starting to realize they need to pay attention to how things are changing around them in a world of communications, branding and messaging.
Branding is often seen as a mystical thing. I hear all the time, “If we could only have our brand strategy understood or clarified” – again, valid comments. But branding, ultimately, is simply letting people know who you are; it’s sharing your personality with the world. It’s the difference between choosing to pull on a pair of jeans, a comfortable T-shirt and sandals for work, rather than dressing up in a suit and tie each day. It’s part of my personality, and it’s my persona.
The same is true of a church. Some churches are more formal, while others are more edgy and reach a different audience. The trick is letting these distinctions shine through. Is it logo, color, Web site or identity package (brochures, letterhead, business cards)? The answer is “all of the above.”
What is the DNA of your church? Are you more the jeans-and-T-shirt place or the suit-and-tie spot? Once you figure out who you are and how you live out this thing called church, the hard part is over. The fun part of branding is coming up with the right messaging and design that allows your personality to be well-known for Christ.

Dennis Richards is the director of communications for Bent Tree Fellowship, where he successfully leads the church in the branding, marketing and communications. Prior to joining Bent Tree, Richards served as a professional marketer and brand manager to the interiors industry, working for several domestic and international brands. Those skills have proven an added resource in helping Bent Tree in its building-expansion program. In addition to his normal responsibilities, Richards also enjoys serving in the Worship and Arts Ministry as one of the guitar players.

The Nation Of Georgia

This article was written by Louis Moore concerning the Georgian crisis and its relationship with the U.S.

The year was 1991. The Soviet Union was nearing its final gasping breaths. By year's end the hammer-and-sickle red flag would fly no more over the Kremlin or elsewhere in the Evil Empire.
Six years earlier I had traveled to the Soviet Union to write my award-winning newspaper series about Jewish Refusniks—Soviet citizens who wanted to flee their motherland for life in either Israel or the United States but were held back by persecution and sometimes imprisonment. I traveled incognito as a tourist in a group of Texas Jews supposedly vacationing in the land of their ancestors. By day we visited tourist sites; by night we ventured from apartment to apartment for our clandestine meetings with the Refusniks. These Soviet Jews were genuinely scared to death of their political keepers; their paranoia was contagious—something we visiting Americans experienced vicariously for the first time.
This time—in December 1991—I now was among my own Baptist people. Our small delegation traveled by way of Moscow to the Republic of Georgia, one of the new countries that was emerging from the breakup of the Soviet Union. Frankly, I'd never heard of the Republic of Georgia until I was invited to join the group.
We were invited there by Georgia Baptist leaders, who feared their Orthodox brethren almost as much as they had feared their former communist masters. Georgia's Baptists wanted the five of us U.S. Baptists to talk directly with Georgia's Orthodox leader about ending what they perceived as persecution by Georgia's Orthodox majority against their tiny Baptist minority. In short, they wanted us to bring American influence to bear on the patriarch, who in turn would influence his people to be nicer to the Georgia Baptists. For our part, we never could figure out how much influence we had, except that we were there physically. And we were Americans.
On arrival in Tblisi we thought our proposed talk with the Orthodox patriarch was our goal. Little did we realize the Georgia government was eyeing us with great curiosity and a much bigger game plan.
I tell this story now because I believe it illustrates the dilemma the U.S. faces in light of the overreaction by Russia starting last Saturday against the little nation of Georgia over Georgia's efforts to reclaim land—called South Ossetia—it believed was stolen from it about the time we visited by revolutionaries aligned with Moscow.
As soon as we arrived in Tblisi in 1991 we started hearing "We love America. We love Americans. We want to be allied with you Americans. Please, can't you get your country to begin diplomatic relations with us?"
Within a few days of our arrival these messages were being delivered by top Georgian government officials, who seemed more than eager to clear their calendars in order to welcome a band of wandering Baptists from America. Each day the top Georgia government official wanting to meet us seemed to be a little higher up in the ranks.
To everyone we met we kept saying, "We are here representing a large group of Baptists in Ã…merica, not the U.S. government."
We decided we must be five of only a small handful of Americans in the entire country of Georgia that year. We also decided Americans were certainly greatly loved in that small, faraway country—or else somebody there sure thought they needed us awfully much.
Finally the invitation arrived for a command performance in the office of Zviad Gamsukhurdia, the country's first elected president. I must readily admit that even though I've traveled in more than 45 different countries, I'm not accustomed to spur-of-the-moment invitations to visit heads of state in their executive offices. This was a total surprise.
Richard Land, our group leader, tried to explain to the Georgian president about our interest in Orthodox persecution of Baptists. Gamsakhurdia was much more interested in whether we had connections with George H.W. Bush, then-President of the U.S, and influential people in the U.S. Congress. He specifically wanted to know if we could help him secure diplomatic recognition of Georgia by the U.S. government. Richard finally told him we would do what we could to help him—which wasn't much.
Returning in a taxi from the president's office/palace to our hotel, we were astonished to see so many military tanks and personnel on the Tblisi streets near the capital.
The next day we flew out of Tblisi to Moscow during the worst snowstorm I've ever seen on the smelliest and worst-maintained Soviet aircraft than I could possibly imagine.
Days after we met Gamsakhurdia, a coup ousted him from office. A few weeks later he and his family members all were murdered as they fled the rebels. In the upheaval the office in which we met him was burned.
In so many ways, the Baptist trip was more unnerving than was the previous Jewish trip, which itself was hair-raising. Georgia was a strange, strange place. Men walked around holding hands with each other. They even kissed each other goodbye in very unmanly ways. The military looked like something straight out of World War II. Why the government officials thought a tiny band of visiting Baptists from America might help them unlock their political fortunes in the U.S. would have been laughable had they not seemed to be so desperate.
Still, in 1991 the Georgians communicated beautifully several important messages: We love America. We need America. We will do anything we can to align with America.
Why did they love and need us so much? Probably because they hated the Soviets (translate today: Russians) so much.
Those are the messages they still are communicating this week.
My heart goes out to the Georgians now as the Russians have taken out their pent-up frustrations on those poor people. I just wish, however, that Georgia's government had not acted so stupidly last Friday night. Didn't it know the bully in its back yard was still a real threat and the country its people love so much was half a world away mired down in its own problems including Iraq and Afghanistan?
But now that the Russians have over-reacted so severely, maybe the Georgians will still get what they've sought for so long—the reciprocal U.S. interest in them accompanied by sympathy, awareness, and massive financial aid. Sometimes you have to lose in order to win. In this situation, Georgia still may turn out to be the big winner in its losing war with the Russians.

The Henderson (Jerusalem) Priority

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth (Acts 1:8).

In the coming months, EBC is going to experience some exciting things. First, all of our normal school year activities will get back in full swing. Second, the Faith Promise Conference (more details on the back) will be held in September. Third, The Jerusalem Priority will occur in October. What a wonderful time it will be here at EBC!
To give you a quick idea of what The Jerusalem Priority is, a few excerpts from the Leader book from Bogard Press have been included below.

The Jerusalem Priority is an outreach emphasis program. The curriculum is designed to assist churches in reaching their communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ. The materials are provided for churches to use during a four-week campaign each year. The target month is October, but the curriculum is undated and can be used anytime. The focus will be on evangelism and outreach for four consecutive Sundays during the selected month. The curriculum includes sermon outlines and Bible lessons for the teachers and students. Promotional materials include bulletin covers and inserts, doorknob hangers, invitation cards, postcards, publicity posters, and vinyl banners. Other items include a daily devotional book, a salvation tract, and an evangelistic survey.
Church members will have the opportunity to invite friends, acquaintances, and family to attend worship services and Bible study. Many will have the privilege of sharing their faith with friends and family during the process.
The presence and power of the Holy Spirit is essential. Psalm 127:1, “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” Prayer will be the most important part of the process. Pray that souls will be saved, people will be baptized, and new Christians will be discipled.

I believe it is important for EBC to reach the surrounding community. While God has blessed us in Great Commission Giving, He will also bless us in Great Commission Work here in Henderson (our Jerusalem).
Therefore, in the coming days, a Jerusalem Priority Outreach Committee consisting of staff members and key leaders in the church will be formed. Furthermore, other members will be enlisted to help with the community outreach events during the fall months.
While this is a big step for EBC, it should not scare us, for we are just doing what the Lord Jesus Christ commanded us to do.
For more information concerning this program you can go to www.thejerusalempriority.com.

Another Thought

Wouldn't the verse below be a problem for hyper-Calvinists?

Say unto them, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways, for why will you die, O house of Israel? (Ezekiel 33:11)

What has happened to logic and our legal system?

While eating lunch today, I saw a news item on Fox News concerning "Sanctuary Cities." The news item focused on San Francisco and its mayor (both of which have issues), and how the city was spending taxpayers' money to advertise itself as a "sanctuary city" for illegal aliens. While I have major issues with the whole idea of sanctuary cities, one statement was made that almost made me choke on my poppy seed chicken casserole.

(To give you a clearer understanding of the following statement, let me inform you of an issue being discussed. There was an illegal alien that had committed a crime and was not deported because he was able to make it to a sanctuary city. Unfortunately, he then killed a man and his two sons. The widow wonders why this man was able to remain in the United States after committing a crime and then able to kill her husband and two sons. While they were discussing this issue, the following was statement was made.)

"Sanctuary cities are not designed to protect criminals."

Then for what reason do you have a sanctuary city?!? A sanctuary city allows illegal aliens (someone who has BROKEN a federal law) to safely live there. So, you have a city designed to protect criminals but it's not a city to protect criminals...uhhh...okay. This is idiocracy (nice word, huh?)! No wonder our nation is in the mess it is. Politicians and citizens cannot even fathom the problems because they don't understand simple issues such as this!

Well, I say let the sanctuary cities be sanctuary cities. In fact, I'll make sure I stay out of there and keep my money out of there. I'll make sure cities such as San Francisco, Austin, and Houston (sanctuary cities) do not have to worry about "my kind." Besides, we don't want law-abiding citizens there...oops, I mean...criminals.

Well, I have more - but for now, I'll stop and let you post your thoughts.

Whew!

What a summer! It has been one BUSY summer for me. I have loved every minute of it, but my body (and mind) is exhausted. Regardless of that though, I am glad God helped me in so many ways to accomplish His work. And yes, it was because of His blessings that I was able to do the following in the last 7 weeks:

Outrigger Island VBS
ABA Messenger Meeting in Spokane, WA
Kids Kamp Evangelist
Encounter Camp Evangelist
The Journey Team Rec Director

Well, now I can get back to my "normal" routine and hopefully catch up on a few things...yeah right!!!
