A Conflict Of Beliefs?

While reading about the murder of abortion doctor, George Tiller, I noticed that he was killed at a church which started me pondering some thoughts. How can a man who claimed membership at a Reformation Lutheran Church perform such ungodly and hideous acts such as abortion? Was his religion just that...a religion? Did that church teach that life did not begin until birth? Was it a "don't ask, don't tell" type situation? Obviously, anyone can claim Christianity and still live a life of sin, but usually it is not an "open" sin. Of course, he probably did not see abortion as a sin, so there was no conflict of interest...I mean beliefs.
