ABA Insurance

For quite some time, I have contemplated the idea of the ABA having voluntary group insurance especially since many preachers and their families have no insurance. Such an action would help many churches, families, individuals, etc. afford decent insurance. In fact, there are similar programs (credit union, etc.) already offered for ABA affiliated preachers, etc. The question is, how do we look into such a program and what are the pros/cons of such an action?

Being an insurance broker, I'd recommend finding a broker who specializes in life/health, and having them put together a program for pastors and their families. Right now, though, you may find that it's pretty expensive and you get less coverage than you once may have when on an employer's policy. Although, I'll maintain that it's definitely going to be better than any individual or family plan. I can recommend some great agents in the Henderson/Texarkana area whenever someone is ready to seriously look into it.

Two big cons:

1)According to several older leaders in our church, this has been tried before, but it was next to impossible to get pastors to sign up.

2)We have an extreme disproportion of older to very old pastors in the ABA.

Hate to be pessimistic sounding, but just wanted to point those two issues out. I support further investigation of this, and think that done right it could be very good. Our church currently has a group set up for our own pastors.

ABA pastors historically find it difficult to cooperate on most any given effort. Yes, ABA insurance has been tried and went no where.
However, Samaritan International is an excellent Christian Needs Share program. For only 240 a month a family of 3 or more can be nearly totally covered with a 200 dollar deductible. I have been with it for over ten years and have never been disappointed.
